In an exclusive interview with WsL, professional surfer Jordy Smith opens up about his remarkable season, the impact of family, and his approach to competitive surfing.

When asked about the secret behind his strongest season yet, Smith credits a profound shift in perspective. “Having a family gives a lot of perspective in life,” he explains. “It’s put my mind at ease and added motivation to make my time worthwhile.”

Smith’s approach to surfing is refreshingly grounded. Now a world number one, he’s learned to take success in stride. “There’s a lot more ease now,” he says. “At the end of the day, whether I win or lose, the sun will still come up, and I’ll still have to take out the trash and change my baby’s diaper.”

Discussing his strategy for the Trestles competition, Smith keeps it simple: “Just go for it.” This approach extends to his overall competitive mindset, focusing on consistency and living in the moment.

On World Ocean Day, Smith reflects deeply on his connection to the sea. “The ocean has given me my whole life,” he shares. “We’ve got to protect it, be respectful in the communities we visit, and try to add to the environment as much as we can.”
